James T. Burgess
Pastor
Reverend Burgess is a native of Raleigh, N.C. and was educated and trained in the Raleigh City Public School System. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. As a Certified Purchasing Manager, he enjoyed a fulfilling and successful 30-year career at the Progress Energy Company in Raleigh, N.C., formerly Reverend Burgess is very passionate about youth and family. He is devoted to his beloved wife, the former Mary Ann Stewart of Apex and Holly Springs, N.C., and the proud father of James Timothy Burgess (Candice Burgess) and deceased daughter, Joselyn Marie-Ann Burgess. He is also a loving grandfather of four grandchildren.
Reverend Burgess received his early spiritual training and ministerial ordination in his home church, Fuller Street Pentecostal, under the leadership of his parents, Pastors Joshua and Lizzie Burgess. He continued his spiritual journey and service for the Lord at Saint Mary's Freewill Baptist Church in Apex, N.C. In 1987 he served as Associate Minister and Bible Study teacher there.
Our Pastor is no stranger to Compassionate. Reverend Burgess became a part of the Compassionate Baptist Church family in 1994. At that time, he experienced an immediate bond with his Pastor, Reverend T. B. Jiles and a convincing love from the church. He found in Reverend Jiles a kindred spirit in his teaching-focused ministry, his love for the Lord and his impeccable integrity. Since 1994 he has served Compassionate as Associate Minister, Bible Study teacher, Adult Sunday School teacher and Director of Christian Education. He was elected as Assistant Pastor in 2005 and Interim Pastor in July of 2007. In June of 2008 he was elected as our Pastor.
We pray earnestly that the Lord will use Pastor Burgess in a way that is pleasing to Him to respond to the charge to "Go ye therefore and teach all nations....."
Ezra 7:10
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost..."
Matthew 28:19
The scripture verses above embody the deepest heart-felt yearnings of our Pastor, Reverend James T. Burgess and reveal the motivation for his relationship and service to the Lord. He truly believes that studying and obeying God's Word and then teaching it to everyone is God's method of building the bedrock required for Christ-honoring lives, families and churches that impact communities and the world. The Compassionate Church family feels blessed that a true servant of God has answered the call from God to teach and minister to His children.
